Southern Manitoba photographer captures silhouette at Morden, MB sign
Pembina Valley photographers have all had a go at the Morden, Manitoba sign
Photographers from Morden, Winkler, Altona, Carman and the rest of the Pembina Valley area have captured this beautiful Morden sign from every angle…or so I thought.
I’ve been waiting for the chance at a silhouette photo of this landmark and finally had a chance at a recent Morden, Manitoba wedding. With the wedding taking place at the Best Western right next door to the sign, I kept a keen eye on the sun. When it was nearly in position, I headed over and set up my composition. With nasty cold winds I knew I’d have to be quick. I thought I’d have to shoot it from behind the sign due to an earlier scouting mission but the sun was fortunately further south this time.
I grabbed my wonderful couple and we ran across the parking lot. Morden wedding photographers are lucky to have this beautiful sign right close by. I directed them to the end of the sign right close to the sun. I underexposed in my camera to turn my couple into a silhouette. Camera settings were ISO 100, F13, 24mm, and 1/500 shutter speed. I specifically wanted a narrow aperture (F13) to allow for the sun to flare the way it did. Luck was on my side as they were positioned perfectly to allow that sun flare to come right between them.
This is the original straight out of camera shot…

The photo needed more blues and warm tones in the sky. After taking it into Lightroom and processing it with my preset, I then had this to work with…

From here it felt a bit too wide. I cropped in a bit more as it was a little bit too wide.

Lastly, there were some distracting elements to the scene which had to go. Into Photoshop I went where I deleted the power lines from the highway along with the lovely bride’s arm which is between the couple and was too distracting. A few minor adjustments after it went back to Lightroom and the final image came out to this…click on image for a larger version.
